Overview

Peppol a cross-border electronic purchasing network. It integrates many components and specifications. It also includes a central directory of user as well as a standard for electronic ordering. OpenPEPPOL oversees and regulates Peppol's administration through multilateral agreements. Peppol is not a platform or a network. Peppol's electronic delivery system makes communication easy. The directory service functions in the same manner as the Yellow Pages directory. It assists in identifying recipients and providing support. It provides access to point providers.

 
A 4-corner model is the core principle of Peppol's communication network. The outer edge is the location of the sender and the receiver. Access points are located at both the corners. Sender sends an electronic document, such as an invoice, to his Peppol Access point. The document is sent electronically to the Peppol Access Point and the counterpart receives it. The counterpart with access to the document receives the document. The counterpart can reply to the network. The document is sent to the network access points by the recipient. The recipient can use the document in their internal invoicing system.

 
Peppol assigns dynamic access point addresses. For requesting information from Service Metadata Locators, (SML), PeppolID (the receiver’s PeppolID), is used. This includes the address for the Service Metadata Providers. SMP will reply with the format that is supported by the receiver as well as the address of the receiving access point. The process will only send files to access points if they are in supported formats.
