The Origin And Background Of Peppol

Peppol's Background And History

The inventor of Peppol is theAssociation Open PEPPOL. In 2008, the PEPPOL project was initiated. It was funded as a pilot project both by the European Commission and by members of PEPPOL Consortium. Peppol e-invoicing purpose was to simplify cross-border electronic procurement. All European governments have developed technical standards to allow direct electronic communication between European agencies and companies for procurement purposes.

This is how the acronym "PEPPOL", which stands for Pan-European Public Procurement on-LineIt. This acronym was eventually replaced by the brand name " at the end of 2019. Peppol", now standing for Global e-procurement. The limitations of the acronym 'Pan-European' or public Procurement are removed, and it can now be rechristened to 'Peppol' to better reflect how it is used today. Peppol is still used widely in B2G circles due to its history with e-procurement, e-invoicing and working with public authorities.

While there are 30 European countries currently using Peppol or are involved in it, there are many more, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Canada. Malaysia and other Asian countries are still in the works. Peppol was originally designed to facilitate procurement in B2G, but many countries now use it exclusively or all the time for B2B.
